Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix
This is just a simple recipe I am sharing. No grand story, no anecdotes. Just a practical list of ingredients that you may use to replace the chemical laden alternative in the little pouches on the grocery store shelves. But remember. This will not taste like the salty packets you are used to, but rather will be smokey and peppery and straight up earthy flavor. Enjoy the welcome contrast of the pure herbs and spices.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix
This is a good list to start with. Adjust quantities to suit your own tastes. I like to buy my spices in bulk and then transfer them to their own container. These are perfect for that! Easy to clean and should last forever!
4 T chili powder
2 T cumin
2 T paprika
2 T dried oregano
1 T onion powder
1 T garlic powder
2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Add 3 level tablespoonfuls of the mix and 1/2 c of water to 1 lb of ground beef or turkey that has been cooked with 1/2 diced onion. Stir well and let simmer a bit for the spices to rehydrate, distribute, and the water to evaporate. Taste for seasoning and add salt if needed.

You seriously read my mind sometimes…I was just searching online for homemade taco seasoning this morning. I can’t wait to try it out!
Great Noelle! Don’t be afraid to mess with it to suite your family’s tastes. I am posting a non-taco dish tomorrow that you can use this mix in as well!
Love homemade taco mix, so much better than packets! I like to sub chipotle powder for half the chili powder that ramps up the smokiness a little.
I might have a little bit of a chipotle powder habit.
Ha! I completely understand! I LOVE the smoky flavor of chipotle powder. And smoked paprika too.
[…] go borrow from were home. I hit up Pinterest for recipes and stumbled across this recipes on Brittany’s Pantry. We don’t’ care for spicy and this recipe seemed to be balanced on the spices. […]
[…] This is a homemade taco seasoning I made and use every time something calls for a little Latin flavor. […]
[…] We still used the processed taco shells, which are actually pretty “real”, with the exception of the preservative. I decided to clean up the taco seasoning. Three minutes and a few spices later and I had a seasoning that looked and smelled just like the processed stuff. And the taste? Delish! I’m sold. In fact, I was infomred by my dear husband that we will no longer be using store-bought seasoning. Well, ok then. This is the recipe I used for the seasoning. […]
what would your measurements be to fill a quart jar? I made your mix and we love it. I was afraid that i might not like cumin or cayenne in it because they sounded like hot spices, but it was wonderful. i was actually thinking of making it as christmas gifts.
Thank you, Jenn! I am so glad you like it! For making larger quantities, remember a few key things. There are 4 T in 1/4 cup and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon. That will make your measuring much easier. If you wanted to make a SUPER big batch, and then divide the mix up into smaller jars (such a great idea!), I would multiply the batch by 4. Be sure to purchase your spices in bulk! Less expensive and so much easier! The recipe would read as follows:
Big Batch Homemade Taco Seasoning 🙂
1 c chili powder
1/2 c each of cumin, paprika, and dried oregano
1/4 c each of onion powder and garlic powder
2 1/2 T of kosher salt
1 heaping T of black pepper
2 tsp cayenne, or to taste
Hope this helps! Thank you so much for reading!!
I have been wanting to try this recipe for quite some time now but hesitant of how it would taste since it was going to be a lot different. I finally had to do it since I was out of the packets lol, and OMG it is 100 times better than the packets!! I am so glad I finally tried it because I will never waste money on the packets again! Even my 6 year old liked it and I made mine kinda spicy because I was out of cayenne pepper, so I used homemade hot pepper flakes. Oh what a great dinner tonight was thanks to your recipe! On a side note, I am hosting my first ever Link Up Party! I hope you can come over and link up with me because I would love to have you!! http://liverandomlysimple.com/totally-terrific-tuesday-linkup-party-1/
My goodness! Thank you so much, Jessica! I am thrilled you liked it! And thanks for the heads up about the link up!
Yum Oh., I found this recipe on Pinterest and I’ll never use a packet again. I just used it for my taco bar party.
Excellent! So glad you liked it, Kimberly! It is the only taco seasoning I use anymore. Thanks for reading!
Use this for almost everything. Put it the crockpot today with chicken thighs and made chicken tacos. Yum.
That sounds fantastic, Kimberly! Thanks for commenting, because others can use this idea too! 🙂
[…] adapted slightly from here […]
Love this recipe. It is the only one I use anymore.
Thank you so much! It is the only one I use too! 🙂
I’ve always meant to thank you for this! I haven’t bought taco seasoning in over 4 years!
